Yes. But you can’t just put the candle in the recycling bin. You have to break the candle down first. At CheckSammy, we start by removing the wax. Once the wax and wick are removed, the glass or metal containers are sorted and sent to recycling centers.
Most candle recycling requires breaking down the candle into separate pieces and recycling those individual parts, which include:
- Candle lid/cover
- Label
- Glass container
- Wick
- Cardboard packaging
- Wax
At CheckSammy, we donate, recycle, or safely dispose of all of the parts of the candle.
There are a few ways to remove wax from a candle. We’ve included the two safest ways below.
(1) Remove wax using hot water. Place the candle on a protective area, like a potholder or dish towel, and pour boiling water into the candle (leaving about an inch of space at the top). The water will melt the wax. The wax will rise to the surface. Once the wax and water have cooled, it can be removed.
(2) Freeze the candle. Freezing shrinks the wax, which makes it easier to remove.
